The
Roads
and
Bridges
Committee
reports
to the
Barrier
Island
Advisory
Committee,
which
reports
to the
Board of
County
Commissioners.
This
committee
makes
recommendations
to the
county
about
the
funds
spent in
special
taxing
unit
0018 Don
Pedro/Knight
Island
Streets
and
Drainage.
The
purpose
of this
taxing
unit is
maintaining
or
improving
the
infrastructure
on our
islands.
This
includes
roads,
bridges,
traffic
signs,
road
striping
and
brush
removal
to keep
lines-of-sight
clear.
Its
scope
was
originally
written
to cover
the
paved
road and
the two
bridges.
The
committee
also
makes
recommendations
on the
sand
roads.
The sand
roads
are
county
roads
that are
not
county
maintained.
The
jurisdiction
area
includes
Knight
Island,
Thornton
Key and
Don
Pedro
Island
from
Stump
Pass to
the
park.
Quarterly,
the
county
sends an
employee
from the
Public
Works
Department
to
attend
the
meetings
and to
listen
to
input.
The
Charlotte
County
Public
Works
Department
is also
responsible
for
other
areas of
concern
to the
islands,
including
waterway
maintenance
and
beach
renourishment.
The
areas
are not
included
in the
scope of
the
Roads
and
Bridges
Committee,
but are
within
the
scope of
the
Advisory
Committee.
