ROADS AND BRIDGES

The Roads and Bridges Committee reports to the Barrier Island Advisory Committee, which reports to the Board of County Commissioners.  This committee makes recommendations to the county about the funds spent in special taxing unit 0018 Don Pedro/Knight Island Streets and Drainage.

The purpose of this taxing unit is maintaining or improving the infrastructure on our islands.  This includes roads, bridges, traffic signs, road striping and brush removal to keep lines-of-sight clear.  Its scope was originally written to cover the paved road and the two bridges.  The committee also makes recommendations on the sand roads.  The sand roads are county roads that are not county maintained.  The jurisdiction area includes Knight Island, Thornton Key and Don Pedro Island from Stump Pass to the park.

Quarterly, the county sends an employee from the Public Works Department to attend the meetings and to listen to input.  The Charlotte County Public Works Department is also responsible for other areas of concern to the islands, including waterway maintenance and beach renourishment.  The areas are not included in the scope of the Roads and Bridges Committee, but are within the scope of the Advisory Committee.
