Palm
Island Estates
Homeowners Association
Annual Meeting
January 20, 2008
Firehouse
Meryl Schaffer called
the meeting to order at
1:07 p.m. Meryl
explained that she would
be presiding over the
annual meeting as Carol
Peterson was ill and Don
Milroy had an excused
absence.
She welcomed old and new
members. She also
provided a short
explanation of the
recent changes in
Robert’s Rules of
Order.
Pat Bieneman read the
minutes of the 2007
Annual Meeting. There
were no corrections or
additions, and the
minutes were approved.
Meryl asked for a Roll
Call of the 2007 Board
Members present: Pat
Gordon, Meryl Schaffer,
Gay Carrozo, Pat
Bieneman, and Mike
Spallone were present.
Pat Gordon delivered the
Treasurer’s Report.
The report was accepted.
Meryl introduced Jay
Julian from the Fire and
Rescue Team for an
update on Station 10.
He reported that they
are in good shape,
provided details on new
equipment additions this
past year, and planned
expenditures for the
coming year. He also
reported that calls were
down again this year.
He discussed some of the
continuing problems they
are experiencing: road
right-of-ways need
trimming, access issues
with gated communities
after hours, and
landscape encroachment
on street turn-arounds.
Cathy Sadenwater gave
the Friends of Pie
Committee Report. She
explained that nearly
$3,000 had been raised
from the year’s
fundraisers, and two
scholarships had been
awarded. The
recipients were Casey
Stratton and Stephanie
Hess. She said that the
application cut-off date
had been moved up once
again, and applications
are now due by April 1st.
Lastly, she indicated
that applications are on
the website and
additional information
is available from the
counselors at Lemon Bay
High School.
Gay Carrozo, with the
help of Rose Malone,
gave a report on the
Social Committee’s
activities. They
encouraged all to attend
the Street Party to be
held on January 26th
at Rose Malone’s home,
and to join in the fun
of Trivial Pursuits
every other Tuesday
evening. Meryl
explained that all
events are posted on the
website.
Meryl delivered Carol’s
President’s Annual
Report. She reviewed
PIE’s original mission
statement and bylaws,
and discussed PIE’s
responsibilities versus
other island issues that
do not fall under PIE’s
jurisdiction. She
discussed and explained
the status of the 2007
projects:
-
Beach access posts and
ropes placement to
delineate the beach
access surveys.
-
PIE online membership
directory.
-
Beach access “Dogs on
Beach” ordinance signs
that were put in place
and their unauthorized
removal. Meryl read
Don Milroy’s email
discussing why PIE had
posted the signs,
explained that PIE was
not enforcing the
ordinance, and who
individuals should
contact with any
questions or concerns.
Meryl thanked the
outgoing board members
and introduced the
incoming board members:
Linda Jones, Rose
Malone, and Ken Connor.
Meryl asked members for
input about issues that
the PIE Board should
pursue during 2008.
Members asked that the
Board follow up on the
following issues:
-
Frequent power outages
on the island
-
Trash
in the road
right-of-ways
-
Return
trash pickups to
Monday
-
Write
to Charlotte County to
say we’re happy with
the bridge (not
necessarily the price)
Pat Bieneman moved to
adjourn the meeting.
Mike Spallone seconded.
The motion passed, and
Meryl adjourned the
meeting at 1:52 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Pat Bieneman
